Undeniably, both men's watches and
ladies' watches have evolved over time. Wrist
watches were originally just pocket watches that were
connected to the wrist somehow. One of the most
important developments on the way to the wrist watches
we are familiar with today was when the face was turned
at a right angle to the standard pocket watch. This
allowed wearers of men's and ladies' watches
to have the faces at a convenient angle for reading,
while still having the stems of the wrist watches easily
accessible for winding and setting. The first stem
devices for wrist watches were developed in the late
1700s to early 1800s, but it wasn't until 1868 that
the first actual wrist watches were invented. From that
point on, the idea of men's watches and
ladies' watches took off! It was still in the
nineteenth century that waterproof cases for both
men's and ladies' wrist watches were invented,
a group of similar men's watches were produced for
a military group, and noted jeweler Cartier designed
gold ladies' watches with precious gems.
The twentieth century showed similar fast and
furious improvements in wrist watches with several
companies producing smaller and more accurate men's
watches and ladies' watches that had a wide variety
of special functions and uses. Surely, miniaturization
will bring many more new and exciting detailing for
wrist watches -- perhaps even Dick Tracy style computers
will one day grace both our mens and ladies' wrist
watches! In fact, dive watches today boast full dive
computers designed for measuring
O2 and Nitrox.
Men's Watches --
Fashion and Function!
The
continuing need for more accurate time keeping and
convenient features has led to huge improvements in
men's watches. Like ladies' watches,
men's watches now provide a wide variety of
features: stop watches, countdown timers, calendars, and
much more. Also, men's watches
have seen the same expansion that ladies' watches
have. While wrist watches for ladies have shifted from
merely fashion to include both fashion and utility,
wrist watches for men have shifted from only utility to
include both fashion and utility too! You can find
men's watches that are round or square faced, or
feature-packed or elegantly simple. Men's watches
are even offered with bands of diverse colors to match
everything from business suits to jogging
sweats!
Ladies' Watches --
Utility, Style, and Elegance!
As
previously mentioned, the first ladies' watches
were developed by jewelers, almost more as fashionable
accessories than time-keeping devices. However,
ladies' watches have changed with the times-- not
only do we have ladies' watches with the same
fabulous features as men's watches, but
ladies' watches come in an unbelievable variety of
styles and colors. You can find
chronograph ladies' watches or even water resistant
wrist watches designed for women divers. Also, of
course, ladies' watches come with the choice
between analog and digital displays just as men's
watches do. With calendars, split second timers, and
even altimeters, ladies' watches offer style and
elegance as well as utility and sensibility.
